Review - Wolder miSmart Smile :) [ENGLISH]

Analysis Wolder mismart SMILE :)

With the market being bombarded with Android devices and given the ease that companies today are manufacturing those devices, this one turned up to be a very affordable solution that recently appeared in the Portuguese market, Wolder mismart SMILE :)

The Wolder, like BQ and Wiko, is a brand that uses recycled components and has installed the base version of Android. In comparison to the segment of big rigs we don't see the latest components, however that does not mean they are not going to be fast and reliable. Also note that there are few brands that nowadays don't use recycled parts from other equipments. To have a basic version of Android, allows these brands to save on customization software, like the Samsung's TouchWiz © or HTC SenseUI ©. The Android’s base version, although it may not be as appealing, has everything the user needs and may even be easier to customize.

Characteristics

In terms of features, the Wolder phone is a quite acceptable within the standards required of a Smartphone of this era. Its Dual Core 1.2Ghz processor and its 512MB of Ram serve the requirements of most users, for normal use of the equipment and even some games.

The processor is an ARV v7 incorporating a GPU MALI 400 MP. The ARM v7 architecture is one that continues to be widely used and has a very good energy efficiency. Despite being described as 1200MHz, the processor in this device can go up until 1300MHz.

The Mali 400 MP is a good graphics processor and has also been widely used in the past, in devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S2. (As can be seen in this small review )

The Wolder even comes with several features such as assisted GPS, light sensors, accelerometer and proximity. Unfortunately it could have more sensors, such as gravity sensor, gyroscope, etc..

With 2 GB of ROM, you have plenty of space for applications the device also has 4GB internal flash memory and you can increase it with the addition of a mini SD card up to 32GB.

One of the strengths of this device is that it supports two SIM cards, both with 3G, which means we can have two cards of different providers, for example, with the ability to access 3G (Internet) network. We can even use a card for calls and another as mobile internet sharing via the internet HotSpot for other equipment.

Now let's see some screenshots of the menus SMILE:

As we saw, the version of Android that comes with the machine is 4.2.2. Unfortunately we have no information if it will be updated in an official way by the brand in the future. In terms of appearance, the equipment has the source launcher for Android applications since it is not a modified Android. Thanks to the possibility of customization of Android for the common user, the equipment can be customized to taste with the choice of another launcher through Google Play.

The display screen is a 4 inch IPS with a WVGA resolution (480x800) and 240 DPI of pixel density. Its colors are extremely clear and has an amazing contrast. Clearly visible on very sunny days.

Design

The Wolder’s design seems sturdy despite being made of plastic. There are room for improvements in terms of appearance, however it is still a very nice phone.
In addition to the manuals, headset and charger, this smartphone comes with a full cover for an extra equipment protection.

Camera

This handset camera uses almost all the bells and wissels of any modern phones, but not everything is about megapixels, we like to delve into this topic a little more.

The Wolder comes with two cameras, a two-megapixel front and a rear five-megapixel camera. The front is obviously a camera for video calls, and the back camera for photography.

In photographic terms the rear camera can take good pictures, as long that your have good light conditions. When you lose a little bit of light at dusk, night or indoors, for example, it loses some quality, showing grain in the pictures (nothing serious), something you would expect in a smartphone of this value. The Wolder May still suffer some shutter delay, making it a bit slow to take the picture.

Despite all this, it brings an LED light, which can be used as flash or flashlight (with the right application) and improve photography at night a little bit.

Autonomy:

This phone’s battery is a fairly common battery, with 1500 mAh. At first we were a little apprehensive, given the screen size of this equipment, we thought it would be a battery a bit modest for it, however it came to reveal exactly the opposite, the battery has an admirable duration for a device of this range. In our hands and with a perfectly normal use (3G, Wi-Fi, calls, etc) the battery lasted for about 48 hours.

Benchmarks:

Since we like to take things a bit further then “normal” usage. we decided to do some benchmarks to Wolder Smile.

The benchmarks can be installed from the download links at the bottom, in case you want to run them on your phone for comparison

As we can see, the performance is similar to the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and it is not so far behind from some more current equipments. It operates smoothly and its fast enough for normal use and even some games.

Conclusion:

With the price reduction on Smartphone’s, largely thanks to the ability to recycling old parts, everyone has the possibility of acquiring a good equipment at a fraction of the cost.

Let's be realistic about the need to have a Quad-Core ultra fast with 3GB of RAM. For normal use is more than enough what Wolder Smile features. We must realize that even the latest Android version uses 4 cores efficiently, more like 8 as the latest devices, the software takes a little longer to reach the hardware level. Of course for enthusiasts it makes perfect sense to have the top range equipment, for obvious reasons, but the truth is that Wolder Smile is all that is really needed with room for some fun. We can enumerate however that more RAM never hurts and if Wolder Smile had 1 GB, it would be perfect.

Thus TechFocus score is:
  • Construction: 3
  • Autonomy: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Camera: 3
  • Display: 4
